The A to Z of Herbs for Healthy Thyroids – S through Z
In this series of blog posts, we’ve looked at some of the herbs in nature’s medicine chest that promote thyroid health. Because an overactive or underactive thyroid gland creates hormonal imbalance and can lead to unwanted weight gain or loss, it’s important to support healthy thyroid function through diet. Healing herbs can be added to smoothies, salads and soups, or steeped in warm water to make a healthy tonic. Here are herbs that promote thyroid health, from S to Z:
Schisandra
This herb and its berries have great antioxidant properties. Preliminary research into the medicinal uses of Schisandra has suggested that it supports the endocrine system (the network of glands that includes the thyroid). It is also thought to help regulate blood sugar.

Siberian Ginseng
This plant, native to Northeastern Asia, has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. It is thought to help normalize the functioning of the endocrine system. Be aware that this herb may have unwanted side-effects if taken in large doses. It’s also not advised if you suffer from hypertension. As with any new supplement, consult with your GP before adding Siberian Ginseng to your diet.
White Willow
Although technically not a herb, white willow bark is added to some herbal thyroid health supplements for its health benefits. White willow is thought to have positive effects on people who have hypothyroidism or underactive thyroids. White willow has also been used historically as an analgesic, since it contains salicin, a chemical with very similar properties to the common painkiller aspirin. People who have aspirin sensitivities should thus avoid using white willow.
Whenever you start taking a natural remedy to boost thyroid health, it is wise to check with your GP beforehand. Even though many health-promoting herbs have been used for centuries, you might have a pre-existing condition that doesn’t respond well to a particular herb. As a holistic doctor, Dr. Alison can consult with you and suggest the right natural hormone support for your unique medical profile.
